The most effective way to help an addicted person is to dance rather than wrestle with them. It can be so frustrating when it doesn’t go our way, when our loved one relapses and lies and all the symptoms flare up from the addiction, it can be maddening. As you think about this as more of a dance, rather than a wrestling match, you’re going to begin to build more rapport and more understanding and more empathy. And through that, you’re going to have a greater influence on their change and helping them progress through the stages of change. So just remember to dance rather than to wrestle.
