Today’s tip on how to help an addicted loved one recover has to do with relapse. Although relapse is never desirable, my view is that change is often circular and difficult. The spiral cycle of change shows how contemplation, preparation, and action usually follow relapse. Relapsers most often take one step backwards in order to take two steps forward. So when one of my clients or one of my addicted loved ones relapse, I try not to focus on it as a big, massive setback, but to look at it as an opportunity to resolve their ambivalence and move forward in stages of change.
