Recovery Tip 33: The Principle of Convalescence
Today’s tip on how to help an addicted loved one recover is the principle of convalescence. When I was leaving treatment the fifth time, one of my therapists, Steve Brown, pulled me aside and asked me what my plans were after I got out of treatment. And my thoughts were to race back into my career and see if I could make up for lost time. At that moment, he taught me the principle of convalescence. Convalescence, or rather time spent recovering from an illness or medical treatment is as critical for someone leaving rehab as it is for the cancer patient leaving the intensive care unit. When someone is newly sober, allow them the blessing of convalescence to take it slow and to take it easy so that they can gain strength
